Summer Reading Program for Children

June 3, 2018

With summer just around the corner, the library is looking forward to this year’s Summer Reading Program for Children, with the theme of Libraries Rock!

We will be offering a 7-week program on Thursday mornings starting July 5, 2018. The youngest children, 4 and 5 years old, will meet from 10-10:45 am in the kids’ room at the library. Older children, 6-12 years will follow at 10:45-11:30 am.

We’ll read stories that support the 2018 theme with books about libraries and the many ways they are delivered to children around the world. There will be books on fossils and rocks, and we’ll be listening to all kinds of music, from rock’n’roll to classical and everything in between. Local musicians will help engage the kids in music making. We’ve purchased a great collection of new books on these topics for checkout. As children set and meet their reading goal for the summer, they will earn both an Oregon Governor’s Award and a gift bag of books and toys supplied by the Ladies Club and the Friends of the Library.

The program is offered at no charge and is funded by an Oregon State Library grant.

501 Library Building Update – Feb 19

February 23, 2018

The 2+2 committee has finished the first phase of the move project. That means the group has taken all the input from library volunteers, managers, patrons etc and created a couple of draft layouts of the new library. We have also drafted a list of the elements identified as needed in the library. This information will be part of the RFP (Request for Proposals) that will be put out for bid ASAP. Hopefully, this will result in a project manager/architect who will then work with our city manager/library commission/city council /volunteer librarians to determine the final design, cost, plans etc.

Please plan to come to a meeting on the afternoon of March 18th, 2018 at the Commons. There will be an opportunity to see the drafts and ask questions and give input.

The time and place of the meeting, formerly known as The State of the City, will be announced soon.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and great ideas!

501 Library Building Update – October 1

October 1, 2017

501 Building for new library

The “2+2 Committee” (two Council members, two Library Commission members, and two Volunteer Library Managers) have been meeting every two weeks, discussing options and making plans about the Library moving to the 501 Building. We have an ambitious timeline and are working hard to meet it. We have gotten amazing input from the volunteer librarians and managers, and other interested people, about how they visualize their “dream” library in this new spot.

We just met to review and prioritize all the suggestions and will narrow down all the information into the collective best vision, knowing revisions will need to be made, eventually, as we learn what we can and cannot change (or afford). We have hired a consultant who is evaluating the condition of the building, codes for libraries, and other requirements. Once he has completed that, he will meet with the committee and present a report with his findings and recommendations.
